The Malwiya Minaret in the city of Samarra in in Saladin Governorate, 125 kilometers north of Baghdad. The minaret was built in 848–852 from sandstone and was originally connected to the adjacent Great Mosque of Samarra by a bridge. During the US occupation the minaret was also used by US soldiers as a lookout position.
